Tonight I attended one of the finest musical performances I have experienced in Rapid City.
These kids are the top string players of all-state orchestra who gather with a guest conductor for an intense weekend rehearsal with a guest conductor and perform together. The weekend is supported by an endowment in the honor of long-time South Dakota string teacher Laiten J Weed.
On the menu tonight was Mozart, Britten, Elgar, and after intermission a fantastic performance of a string quartet by Shostakovich. The conductor was Tom Zelle from North Park University in the Chicago area and he worked very hard with the group. They received a (well-deserved) standing ovation at the end of the first part of the program, which is unusual around here!
These kids worked hard all weekend and the results were no short of amazing. I captured some video I hope to post soon.
