Kristin Conzet voted for South Dakota women yesterday!

Kristen Conzet was our hero yesterday. Too bad all but two of the Republicans on the committee killed the bill (HB1156) to guarantee that insurance companies cover basic health care to women (by one vote -- that's progress!)

Here's how it went down yesterday in committee. So close. If we only had another Republican or two that felt women deserved at least as much access to birth control as men deserve access to ED drugs.

THE MOTION TO DO NOT PASS HB 1156

Moved by: Greenfield
Second by: Solum
Action: PREVAILED BY ROLL CALL VOTE. (8-5-0-0)

Voting Yes: Greenfield, Jensen, Kirschman, Krebs, Novstrup (David), Pitts, Solum, Rounds
Voting No: Blake, Conzet, Fargen, Nygaard, Solberg

Here's my thank you to Rep Conzet, which is well-deserved:

Rep Conzet,

Thanks so much for supporting this bill [HB 1156]

I really appreciate your decision to make the DO PASS and Defer votes non-partisan -- which on this topic especially can be a risky vote for a West River legislator.

Not covering essential health care services for women is basically a surtax on women's health care -- which the women of South Dakota can ill afford. Thank you for recognizing that reality and voting on it.

I hope the women in District 33 remember Phil Jensen's votes on this bill this fall. (I know, not likely, as (apparently) many of them don't believe women of child-bearing age deserve control over their own bodies.)

  2. ...plus I see she's filed to run for a full term. Let's see if she can bring some more sensibility to the GOP.

(By the way, that crown is a hoot! :-) )
