What is it with these dentists?

There's a Word O God opinion piece by Tom Udager in the RCJ today charging that that Christians have no trust in the Bible anymore.

Talk about celebrating spiritual and philosophical ignorance. I believe the Bible is true, but how do these people call it "inerrant" with a straight face? Any careful reading of the Bible points out its many contradictions and cultural myopias. And even a casual reading clearly points out its inescapable truths... there is a reason the Bible is where it is, and why Christians (yeah even the supposedly Godless evolution-believing ones like me) call it Holy Scripture.

Thank the good Lord we live in America, a country that refuses to be lectured to for long.

And I must ask, what is it with these fundamentalist hyper-Christian right-wing dentists in Rapid City?

I encourage you all to have a blessed Advent, and while you prepare for the coming of Christ, be sure and brush and floss well as part of your practice of Advent. If you are disciplined, hopefully you can avoid these people.

Many of these fundamentalists are shockingly ignorant concerning their own religion. The Bible can be immeasurably more satisfying if it is understood in the appropriate context and with some knowledge of the history, culture, and authors of the specific books. Unfortunately, this kind of knowledge is almost completely absent from most church study groups and is in fact often looked on as damaging to faith. I believe the opposite is often true-that a deeper understanding of the origins of the Bible can enhance faith. It is time to leave childish things behind and step into the faith of adults.

  2. St. Paul had it right, and those that think they have all the answers from their own small group's perspective should read Paul again:

For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only in part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known. (1 Cor 13:12)

If you believe that this is are the Word O' God needing no cultural context required, you should consider that this is a clear quote of Plato. (One of many in Paul, who was a well-read intellectual of this time. Today he would definitely be a Democrat. [And probably out, too, but that's for another day!])
